Nassau county has a record
total of 3,439 acres of park land,
County Executive Eugene H.
Nickerson announced this week,
" Prior to 1962, the county had
developed only two major parks
totaling 1,004 acres, Salisbury
andthcTackapausha Preserve at
Seaford.
" Since then we have developed
and acquired a total of 2,435 acres
of park space," Nickerson added,
" Our goal is to create the
finest system of parks in the
State; parks for young and old
alike, both active and passive,
for leisure and action, to satisfy
the needs of every Nassau resident,"
Nickerson explained.
When Nassau's parks are fully
developed, they will include some
features not ordinarily found in
recreation space. Next spring
the 165- acre Old Bethpage Park,
acquired in .1963 will be opened.
It consists of an historic village
of 12- old- fashioned houses.
Another unusual development
will be the sensory garden for the
blind in Wantagh Park at Wan-tagh.
This will be crowded with
fragrant plants to delight those
who cannot see.
Some parklands will retain the
unspoiled way of the past. The
171- acre Cow Meadow Preserve,
at Freeport, acquired in 1964
is now under design as is the
47- acre Muttontown Nature Preserve,
acquired at the same time,
which will be preserved for future
generations.
The County Executive also announced
completion of the 60-
