EXPECT 9,800 STUDENTS
FARMINGDALE COLLEGE About 9,800 students will begin classes at the State University
Agricultural and Technical College at Farmingdale
within the next two weeks.
Classes for 3,800 daytime students will begin on Monday,
September 25 and evening classes for 6,000 students will
begin on Thursday, September 21. The total represents
the largest figure for a college of this type a school spokesman
told The Farmingdale Observer.
The annual operating budget for the college is over six
million dollars, with four million dollars allocated for payroll.
Republic To Begin Space Chamber Simulation Studies
A series of space chamber
simulation studies, including
the longest manned confinement
experiment yet to be undertaken,
will be conducted by the Life
Sciences Department of Pairchild
Hiller's Republic Aviation Division
under a $ 646,430 Air Force
contract.
The series of experiments
which will be administered in
Farmingdale, will be used to
determine how man will react
with his life support equipment
in a simulated space flight environment,
and will be conducted
over a three- year period in the
Life Support System Evaluator
at the Aerospace Medical Research
Laboratories, Wright-
Patterson Air Force Base, Dayton,
Ohio. Four men will be placed
in the evaluator where various
tests will be conducted during
separate confinement periods of
60, 180 and 270 days.
Two four- man teams will be
selected - one inside the chamber
as crew and the other outside as
monitors - with a professionally
trained microbiologist, physiologist,
psychologist and systems
engineer on each. Each individual
will be required to perform
various experiments and tasks
while in the chamber. Because the
chamber crew will include graduate
students who are in the advanced
stages of their research,
it will be possible for each man
to continue his education through
courses and lectures which will be
given over television monitors.
Special programmed courses will
also be taken by the crew members.
Life inside the chamber during
the experiments will be carefully
planned to accomplish the
scientific tasks and to prevent
boredom. Three eight- hour time
periods have been established for
sleep; group measurement, communal
activities and common academic
programs; scientific functions,
housekeeping, monitoring
operations and personal needs.
The microbiologist will be r e sponsible
for conducting bodyand
environment samplings for bacteria
and the physiologist will
take daily biomedical measurements,
including among others,
blood pressure, respiration,
temperature and blood chemistry.
The engineering crew member
will maintain and assess the life
support systems and the psychologist
will conduct behavioral
tests and make observations on
the psychometer performance of
his colleagues.
Dr. Hugo D. Freudenthal, principal
investigator on the study,
said that the first crew members
will be selected in the next three
months and that the experiments
will begin this Fall.
