He had been cited for throwing,
himself on an enemy grenade
during Operations Hastings on
July 18, 1966. Gallagher rolled
off the grenade, picked it up and
threw it into a nearby river,
where it had exploded harmlessly
when it hit the water.
Gallagher was an Irish citizen
who came to stay with his sister
and her husband, John, five years
ago. He worked as a carpenter,
when he first arrived, then earned
a real estate license and later
went into the insurance business
in Merrick.
He joined the Marines on November

Walsh put it, " He wanted my
daughter who was born while he
was in Vietnam and my sister's
son to grow up in a country that
was free."

lighting. Petito said the improvements,
to be included in his 1967
Town Capital Budget, also includes
six new tennis courts,
six hand ball courts, play areas,
interior roads and lighting, additional
boating facilities . and a
boat launching control and service
building.
" This project is going to give
a significant recreational lift to
the Massapequas," stated Petito.
" All segments of the population:
Youth, adults and our senior
citizens, will have improved
facilities for their leisure time
use. With the federal and state
governments assuming most of
the cost, the program will be
a well- priced bargain for the
Town of Oyster Bay." Work has
already begun on the Burns Park
improvements after being approved
by Town officials several
weeks ago. Thel967TownCapital
Budget prepared by the Supervisor
is expected to be released
in several days and will be the
first proposal of its type on the
Town level in Nassau County
history, according to a Town
spokesman.
