Mrs, Rosen Elected President Fir, f carrier
Of Friends Of Library
According to an announcement
this week by the Friends of the
Farmingdale Library, the following
officers were elected at last
week's meeting: Mrs. Lucile
Rosen, President; George Fain,
Vice President; Alzada M. Johnston,
Secretary and Irma Thomas,
Treasurer.
The nominating committee was
made up of Mrs. William C.
Drewes, Sandra Gerston and Paul
Tilford.
Melvin ' Brenner and Hillard
Boss were named co- chairman
of the Action Committee.
Mrs. Sophie Hencken was
named Membership Chairman.
Kenneth Lang was elected
Chairman of the Youth Committee.
According to Mrs. Rosen, the
reason why Library Trustee elect
Carl E. Gorton was declared
' out of order' because he wished
to speak while there was a motion
on the floor regarding action
on how to get the library budget
passed.
The application for membership
by Gorton was turned
down since ' he could not adhere
to the by- laws of the
Friends of the Library.' specifically,
" This association supports
the library in maintaining
its responsibility as guardian
of the peoples freedom to read.
We believe the library should
make available in its materials
the widest diversity of views and
expressions. We defend the
right of the library board and staff
to select materials without censorship."
The Friends of the Farming-dale
Library will hold a symposium
on Thursday, June 8,
concerning the issue of censorship
at Weldon E. Howitt Jr.
High School at 8: 30 p. m.
Clergymen who will participate
in die panel discussion include:
Reverend K. J. Hoover,
Pastor, Farmingdale Methodist
Church; Rabbi Teicher, Farmingdale
Jewish Center; Reverend
A. Palmer, Rector of St. Thomas
Episcopal Church, and Father
Basil of St. Kilian'sR. C. Church.
The moderator will be Joseph
Stern, local attorney.
Mrs. Lola Wenner of 14 Eagle
Lane Farmingdale is pictured in
her new uniform as the first female
letter carrier to be hired
at The Farmingdale Post Office.
When offered the position last
December Mrs. Wenner was told
that some of the tasks and conditions
may prove difficult, but
she said she " would see it
through". It would seem — " what
Lola wants, Lola gets". She performs
the various tasks of a substitute
letter carrier including
driving vehicles, delivering parcel
posts and making mail box
collections.
St. Luke's To Present Honor Principal
Jazz Worship Service
St. Luke's Lutheran Church
will present a Jazz Worship Service
on Sunday evening June 11
at 8: 15 p. m.
The Bethlehem Progressive
Jazz Ensemble, from Bethlehem
Pennsylvania, will provide the
music and Pastor John Gensel,
Pastor to the Jazz Community
of New York City, will be the
liturgist and Preacher.
The Bethlehem Progressive
Ensemble was formed five years
ago to introduce contemporary
music to the church. Its members
believe that the expressions of
all art forms can be used in
worship and, in particular, that
contemporary forms should be
encouraged. The Ensemble's
contribution to this belief is a
repertoire of liturgical progressive
jazz arranged by Robin Miller,
pianist and director. Other
members of the group are Nancy
Miller, soprano; David Pearson,
drums; Barry Erb, marimba;
and George Jones, bass.
The worship to be presented
on that evening with Dr. Gensel
will be a liturgical service set
to progressive jazz. The Ensemble
has performed at colleges
and churches throughout the East.
The general public is invited
to participate in the worship
service.
