Chiefs Win Thriller;
Dalers, Bisons Not So Lucky

Massapequa High eked out a
close 46- 45 basketball win last
Friday against Valley Stream
Central in a come- from- behind
game played on the loser's court.
The Chiefs trailed and
were behind 25- 21 at halftime and
30- 31 at the end of three quarters.
The Pequans came within
one point with two seconds to play
when they called time. A layup
shot by Bob Bontemps at the
buzzer climaxed the thrilling win.
Bontemps also led his team in
scoring with 17 points and pulled
down 15 rebounds.
This Friday Coach Joe Mayers
squad will entertain Sewanhaka
at home in a game slated for
8 p. m. On Tuesday the Pequans
will travel to East Meadow for
another league encounter.
The Chiefs are now 5- 4overall
and 4- 1 in league play.
The Berner High School basketball
team was no match for
Freeport last Friday as the Bisons
dropped a 68- 47 tilt to the
visitors.
Coach Chris Sweeney's lads
fell behind at the first quarter
mark 17- 7 and wire down 32- 23
at halftime. The visitors then
pulled ahead 52- 36 after three
quarters of play to win in a
breeze.
Mike Kerr led Berner with 16
points followed by Bob Nelson
and John Theofanis with nine
points each.
Berner will play Kennedy high
school at home this Friday at
8 p. m., followed by an away game
at Hewlett at 4 p. m. on Tuesday.
The Farmingdale High School
basketball team lost theirfourth
straight league game by a close
58- 54 score to MacArthur at
home last Friday.
The co- defending North Shore
I league champions, who have
tour juniors and one senior on
the squad, were able to keep
pace with the winners for most
of die game, but were unable to
post dieir first league win after
hanging on to a 39- 39 score after
three quarters of play.
Jerry Bynum and Dave Mable-ton
with 15 points each, led Coach
Bob Mulligan's squad in scoring.
The Dalers will be looking for
their first league win this Friday
at home against Plainview in a
game scheduled for 8: 15 p. m.
On Tuesday, the team will journey
to Hicksville for another
league encounter.
Farmingdale is now 2- 7 overall
and 0- 4 in league play.
The Plainedge High School
basketball team which had been
idle during the past week, will
play Hicksville this Friday in an
away game scheduled for 8 p. m.
Coach Jerry Fiorenza's lads will
return home on Tuesday to entertain
Clarke in an 8 p. m. game.
Committee Slates Last
Meet Before Recommendations
The Recreation Committee of
the Village of Massapequa Park
will hold its second public meeting
on Wednesday, February 1,
at 8: 30 p. m. in the Village Hall.
The meeting will offer Village
residents an opportunity to hear
and discuss the latest proposals
for development of the 25 acre
Mansfield Park and acquisition of
11 acres on Great South Bay.
It will be the last public meeting
before the Recreation Committee
makes its recommendation
to the Village Board.
Since a referendum on die
matter will be included on die
ballot during the Village election
in March, the Recreation Committee
urges Village residents to
attend.
TOB Display At Marine Show
The Town of Oyster Bay will
present a beach- parks- recreation
display at the Marine Recreation
Boat Show, February 4
through 12th atthe Island Garden,
West Hempstead. The display
will include movies and slides
of the Town's beaches, parks and
recreation activities.
The special 40- foot display
will feature nautical accessories
used at the Town's twelve beaches,
three launching ramps, two
boat basins and the four community
parks.
In addition to photos and
artists' sketches, a slide and
Barney Ross, who won the world's lightweight and welterweight
championships in die 1930' s, and who went on to display greater
courage outside the ring, earning a Silver Star as a marine of
Guadalcanal and later overcoming a drug habit, passed away this
past week. Photo was taken on May 31, 1938 when Ross, die champion,
weighed in with Henry Armstrong on the day of their epic
battle. The fight was Barney's last in the ring as he lost his title
to Armstrong that night in the old Madison Square Garden Bowl
in Long Island City. This was one of the first news pictures made
by then youthful Jack Pokress, and now OBSFRVFR photographer.

for recreational development
of die 25 acres and die
11 acres in Bar Harbour.

undefeated wrestling team
chalked up their nintii straight
victory witii a 26- 18 non- league
win over Westbury this past week.
The matmen, who have a 9- 0,
overall and 3- 0 league record
also defeated Hicksville during
the past week in a league match
after copping a holiday tournament
over East Meadow, West-bury
and Clarke.
Co- captains Bill Wallingunda
and Dave Waters will attempt to
lead tiieir team to a tenth straight
win at Syosset this Friday.

Massapequa Mustangs football a-wards
dinner at Carl Hoppl's,
Baldwin last Sunday to pay t r i bute
to six league champions
in die 16- team football program.
Each youngster received a
souvenir football and certificate
of participation. Members of
championship teams also received
trophies and emblems.
A host of civic and political
leaders were among those in at-tandance
including Nassau County
Executive Eugene H. Nickerson,
Town of Oyster Bay Supervisor
Michael N. Petito, Town Councilman
Angelo D. Roncallo and
Ralph Marino, Massapequa Park
Mayor Rudolph Sickinger and
School District 23 Board of Education
President J. Lewis Ames.
Dick Lynch of die New York
Football Giants was die principal
speaker.
Championship teams who were
singled out for special honors
included die Mustangs Seniors,
winnners of die Warner Conference
Metropolitan title, die
Junior Varsity who copped die
Long Island Junior Varsity crown,
the Pee Wees who garnered die'
Long Island Pee Wee title and
the Bears, Chargers, and Packers
who won die eleven and 10
year old Town League titles r e spectively.
