QUESTION: My boy reads
only baseball stories; he refuses
to read die " classics"
or books on other subjects. How
should I break him of mis?
ANSWER: Don't attempt to
" break" him of his reading habit.
He is going dirough a normal
stage in his development and is
ravenously hungry for all baseball
stories. Our school library
books are very carefully chosen
and include many of the positive
values that we hope children will
learn and assimilate as part of
character development, such as
sportsmanship, honesty, heahh-ful
relationships with parents
and peers, etc. No book is
really all baseball - it is baseball
and odier dungs, and books
have much more to offer tiian
would be indicated by their titles.
Exposure to these other elements
in their reading will gradually
lead die children on to different
topics and wider horizons.
Patience is die word for those of
us who would change our children's
reading habits to conform
to our own.
QUESTION: Why doesn't my
second child receive Physical
Education?
ANSWER: The policy in Plain-edge
has been to start Physical
Education in die tiiird grade.
The State, however, recommends
diat Physical Education be taught
in all grades, one dirough twelve.
We at Plainedge are striving to
meet this requirement. Our
reason for not reaching die goal
is budgetary radier dian philosophical.
QUESTION: How much should
my child practice his musical
instrument?
Answer: He should practice
30 minutes a day, preferably at
die same time each day - six
days a week, in order to be successful
on his instrument.
QUESTION: Does my child get
instrumental lessons during
school time?
ANSWER: Yes; however, die
child is expected to keep up
witii his school work, at all
times. It is die child's responsibility
to inquire if any
classroom work was m i s s ed
while he was at lessons.
Views expressed in diis column

you have a question, please direct
it to James Morris, President,
