Chiefs Win In Battle
For First Place
Massapequa High School
basketball team eked out a close
72- 70 win over Baldwin to remain
tied with Calhoun for the
South Shore Section I League lead
with a 7- 1 mark.
The Chiefs who had built up a
13 point lead in the second half
found themselves down by three
points 70- 67 with less than two
minutes to go. A pair of foul
shots by Larry Flamia and one
by Bob Elliott knotted the score
at 70 all. The Pequans then
picked off a rebound and worked
for a last shot as Flamia tossed
in the clincher from the foul line
at the buzzer.
Tuesday's game with Ocean-side
was called due to the snowstorm.
On Friday Coach Joe
Mayer's squad takes on Mepham
in an away game. The hosts have
a 2- 6 league record.
The Jayvees posted a 44- 40
win over Baldwin to give them
a 8- 0 league and a 12- 0 overall
record. Mike Barrett scored 18
points for the little Chiefs.
Martin Plays For College
Varsity And Frosh Fives
Robert Martin
For a guy who reported out
of shape at season's start, Bob
Martin of 466 Charles Avenue,
Massapequa Park is giving a
big assist to his college basketball
team right now.
The 6'- 5" freshman is helping
to pace Boston's Bent ley College
varsity to an outstanding 14- 1
record, and is averaging six
points and seven rebounds a game
in part time action.
The Bentley Falcons are currently
leading the East in scoring
at 100 points a game and
rank among the top 10 small
colleges nationally in scoring,
Bentley began a varisty athletic
program three and a half
years ago, and the basketball
team has rolled up impressive
records of 16- 5, 15- 6, 18- 5, and
14- 1 to date. The ski team has
a New England Intercollegiate
Ski Conference championship to
its credit. Other sports include
cross country, golf, and tennis
with baseball and soccer due
soon.
Martin is a 1966 graduate of
Farmingdale High School. A
top basketball player there, he
averaged in double figures every
season and in his senior year saw
his club win the North Shore I
divisional crown.
But, the big 18- year- old center
is finding college competition
a new challenge.
Since he's a freshman, Martin
is also a starter on the Flacon
frosh squad, and is averaging 14
points a game.
Martin admits that he gets a
" little tired" playing for both
the freshmen and varsity teams
in the same night, but he does
feel that all the extra playing
time " really helps."
Martin's two biggest assets
right now are his jump shot and
his rebounding.

Farmingdale High School was
on the short end of a high scoring
basketball game as they were
outmanned by Clarke by a score
of 87- 74.
Despite 21 and 20 point efforts
by Mableton and Funk, the Dalers
could never quite bridge the 41-
28 half time gap.
Coach Bob Mulligan's lads
were to have played hosts to
Syosset on Tuesday, but the game
was cancelled due to the snowstorm.
This coming Tuesday the
Dalers will be away at North
Shore High in a game scheduled
for 4 p. m.
Plainedge High scored a 59-
44 win over MacArthur on the
loser's court with Lenowicz leading
the Red Devil attack with 28
points.
Coach Jerry Fiorenza's defensive
minded quintet allowed their
hosts a total of 16 points during
the first half as the winners led
13- 11 and 25- 16 for the first
two quarters.
The traditional rivalry between
Plainedge and Plainview slated
for last Tuesday was postponed.
On Friday, the Devils will play
host to Syosset at home in an
8 p. m. encounter.
Berner High made a game of it
for the first half but after that
the host Long Beach basketball
quartet went into high gear to take
it 64- 46 after a close 30- 27 first
half.
Kerr was the only Bison to hit
double figures with 16 points as
Berner trailed throughout.
The Tuesday Uniondale game
was postponed but Coach Chris
Sweeney's lads are hoping for
an upset this Friday when they
entertain a strong Lawrence
quintet in a game slated for 8
p. m.

On shooting, Martin said his
only secret is to watch his opponent
to find his weakness, and
then take advantage of it.
Martin feels both shooting and
rebounding are much tougher in
college since he's up against bigger,
stronger and more talented
opponents.
Martin is impressed with New
England basketball in general
and Bentley College basketball
in particular. " They really do
things right," he commented.
Martin plans to play summer
basketball inthe Rockville Center
League, and run cross country for
Bentley in the fall.

Boatmen Must
Face Penalty
As of June 1, 1967 pleasure
boatmen will be expected to have
their boat ventilation systems,
meet Coast Guard requirements
or face a possible $ 100 penalty.
The requirements were originally
to have gone into effect last
June 1, but boatmen were given
an additional year in which to get
their craft in shape.
Coast Guard regulations specifically
call for at least one inlet
duct fitted with cowl or equivalent.
Ducts must extend from the
open atmosphere to a point at
least midway to the bilge for the
intake air duct and to the lower
portion for the exhaust. Current
industry standards will satisfy
the requirements and are recommended.
