Spotlight on the Sunken Forest on Fire Island
Part 3
Sailor's Haven, run by the National Park Service, and a
part of Fire Island National Seashore is near Cherry Grove on
Fire Island. You may reach it by ferry boat or your own boat
where there is a marina. One of the main features is the
Sunken Forest, one of nature's most charming hideaways on
Fire Island. The cool and dimly lit deep green dells of the
Sunken Forest offer a pleasant change from the more vivid
island colors of sun, sand, and sea. A trail takes you into
the woods and as you wind your way along, you may travel
one half mile as the trail circles around to bring you back
to the beginning at the trail shelter.
The shrubs are streamlined by the winds; salt spray, carried
off the sea's surface, moistens the plants' leaves. The salt
' draws out' the fresh water from the living tissue, shriveling
and killing the leaves.
The beach plum and wild cherry may be seen; American
Holly, Black Gum and Sassafras abound. There is also a bog
area with a grouping of plants such as spagnum moss and
cinnamon fern.
A canopy of maple boughs spread overhead in one area.
You will find the blueberry in the thicket as well as Poison
Sumac. Swamp Azalea which blossoms in mid- summer with
waxy white, delicate flowers offers an enticing perfume which
attracts bees.
In the Salt Marsh area, you will find one of the richest kinds of
plant environment. Marshes and wetlands are important fish
nurseries J breeding areas for birds J homes for a variety of
creatures and silent factories that produce a prodigious
flow of food which oozes into the bay to support multitudes of
fish and shellfish.
In this relatively dry marsh, you will see a giant reed, which
is also commonly known by its Latin mane, ' Phragmites'.
This vigorous rank grass thrusts up as high as 15 feet.
In the bay there is a tremendous amount of Eel Grass,
the long rows of what looks like black strips of paper are
dead blades of eel grass, which is a green plant when living.
It is one of the few floating marine plants. Another very
abundant plant of the Bay is codium, which looks like green
worms tied together. It is one of the many kinds of algae.

A close look in the sand of the
beach along the Bay, often reveals
countless numbers of tiny
snail and clam shells mixed with
the sand grains. The Great South
Bay, when undisturbed, produces
an annual harvest of clams and
scallops amounting to millions
of dollars for local industry and
bringing joy to seafood fanciers.
You will probably see the common
Horseshoe Crab, which are
not crabs at all. The nearest
relatives are spiders. Although
they may look frightening, they
are relatively harmless.
Flounder abound.
The Dodder, a parasite, which
looks like a yellow twine bound
around many of the other plants,
does not need green chlorophyll
to make its own sugars and
starches, but leaches its living
from the host plant.
Covering much of the forest
floor is the Sarasapar ilia, an herb
that grows about a foot high with

fine lance - like leaflets comprising
each leaf. Flavoring for tea
or root beer is made from its
roots.
Catbrier is conspicuous. This
plant has heart- shaped leaves,
but the heartless claws of stout
curving spines are enough to
identify the plant.
An attractive small tree is the
Shadblow, which may be identified
by its gray sinous trunk traced
with black stripes. It is also
known as serviceberry or une-berry.
This lovely, interesting forest
was almost destroyed. A number
of years ago real estate developers
proposed to subdivide
the area into lots for summer
cottages A number of generous
persons contributed time and
money to organize the Sunken
Forest Preserve, Inc. The
central portion of the forest was
purchased and saved to be kept in
its natural condition. After the
Fire Island National Seashore
was authorized, the property was
given to the Federal Government,
for the benefit of the people. In
• addition to this forest, the
National Park Service intends to
preserve most of the undeveloped
oortions of Fire Island in their
natural, wild state.
There are guided nature walks
and on various evenings of the
week, illustrated programs are
presented.
The Rangers are there to serve
you as well as to protect the
plants, the animals and the public
property.
