Bus Council Announces Senior Would Take AwayMCTA
Citizens Transportation Experiment Power To Increase Fares
The Nassau County Bus Council
has announced an experimental
program of special bus transportation
designed to provide
door- to- door bus service for
senior citizens throughout the
County. The joint effort of the
privately- owned bus companies
claim they will execute the program
in their own local area.
Also Council spokesman said
that present, transportation to
Senior Citizens' Centers is a •
major problem, depending upon
volunteers, local cabs and car
pools. Under the Bus Council
proposal, the Council will funnel
senior citizens' requests for special
transportation to the bus
company in the area best able to
service the particular group. A
specially- tailored bus route and
schedule will be worked out, to
provide practically door- to- door
pickup for senior citizens in a
given area, with direct service
to the senior citizens'club or organized
activity. At the comple- .
tion of the program, the elderly
participants will be picked up
and returned to their home areas.
A local transportation chairman
of the senior citizens' unit is
expected to be designated by the
senior citizen club, to work with
a transportation expert from the
bus company. The transportation
chairman will provide information
on requests for service
to the bus company representative,
who will develop the route
and schedule, in close coordination
with the schedule of activities
at the senior citizen center.
Schedule information will be distributed,
and the service provided
as scheduled. The senior
citizens' transportation director
will be responsible for fare collections
from the individuals, at
a pre- determined tariff.
" This highly flexible special
transportation plan for senior
citizens should provide the answer
to thousands of elderly
