Three Music Groups Perform In Competition
Three Music groups from the
Farmingdale Public Schools performed
at the New York State
School Music Association Competition
which was held in the
Mill Lane Junior High School
last Friday and Saturday. All
three received " Honor" ratings
from the State adjudicators. The
High School Chorale directed by
Mr. A. Schiffrin receivedan " A"
in Grade six Music, the highest
score possible in the competition.
The High School Concert Band
missed an " A" in Grade six
Music. Mr. A. Flore directed the
Concert Band.
Howitt Junior High School was
represented by the Howitt String
Orchestra. Directed by Mr. F.
Farago, they received an " A"
in Grade four Music. The rating
was a first for Howitt and for
Farmingdale in String Music
competition.
Thirteen Choirs, eight Orchestras,
and 15 Bands competed for
grades. 22 groups received " A"
ratings, 12 groups earned " B"
ratings. Approximately 2,500
students performing in the annual
event which was hosted by
the Farmingdale Music Department
for the North Nassau Zone
of the New York State School
Music Association.
Mrs. Jones Installs PTA Officers Squires Slate
Mrs. Josephine Jones, member Teen Dance
of the Board of Education and former
P. T. A. unit president, conducted
the annual installation of
officers of the Northside Parent-teacher
Association last Wednesday.
Officers for 1968- 69 include:
president, Mrs. Dorothy Comolli;
first vice- president, Mrs. Pat
Norman; second vice- president
( program) Mrs. Joann Dow; third
vice- president ( ways and means)
Mrs. Gloria Schanno; secretary,
Mrs. MarieSantasier; treasurer,
Mrs. Edna Weiden; council delegates,
Mrs. Dolores Capece and
Mrs. Dorothy Dyson.
Mrs. Joann Dow, program
chairman, presented the award-winning
film Leaves of Grass,
which portrayed the life and
travels of Walt Whitman on Long
Island a century ago. Vincent Cle-mente
of the Farmingdale Senior
High School English Department
then spoke on Whitman and read
several original poems dedicated
to him.
Mrs. June Drewes made the
presentation of the annual P. T. A.
Life Membership Award for outstanding
community service to
Mrs. Mildred Johnston. Both are
former presidents of the North-side
School P T. A.
Earlier in the evening the organization
had served its annual
Teacher Recognition Day Dinner
to the Northside faculty and staff.
Chorus Director Takes
College Assignment
Alfred Schiffrin, Director of
the Farmingdale High School
Chorus will teach Choral
Conducting at Adelphi University,
next year and also conduct the
Collegiate Chorale at the Farmingdale
Agricultural and Technical
College.
Schiffrin has served as an
ad jiidi tea tor for the New York
State School Music Association
competitions and has had
several articles published in the
New York School Music News.
In addition to being a member of
the Music Educators' National
Conferences and the New York
School Music Association he is
a member of the A merican Choral
Directors Association. His High
School Chorus has won nothing
but 6A ratings and his Mill Lane
Junior High School Chorus in
1963 was the first in the state
to win a 6A in the State Music
Competition.
He was awarded a fellowship
by Washington University in St.
Louis in 1967 to complete work
toward the doctorate degree.

will speak at the Conservative
Club of Farmingdale on Tuesday,
May 28 at 8 p. m. at the American
Legion Hall, Eastern Parkway
and Prospect Place, Farming-dale.

District Wide Music Festival
Slated For Tuesday At Howitt
The Annual District - Wide
Elementary Music Festival will
take place in the Howitt Gymnasium
on Tuesday evening, May
28 at 8: 00 p. m.
The Music Festival will consist
of a band of 120 students, an orchestra
of 85 students, a Chorus of
150 students, and a flutophone
band, composed of 90 third grade
students.
Students participating in die
Festival were selected by die
teachers from each of die six
elementary schools in the Farmingdale
School District. Admission
will be by special invitation
only.
Teeners Organize To Aid Poor
A group of young people in
Farmingdale is collecting canned
goods, clothing and cash contributions

away last Friday.
He is survived by his wife

Elizabeth Coskie of 170 Grant
Ave., Farmingdale, passed away
on Sunday, May 19. She was the
widow of the late Frank J. Coskie
and is survived by her sons,

A Requiem Mass was said at St.
Kilian's R. C. Church on Wednesday,
May 22. Interment was in
St. Charles Cemetery, Farming-dale.

St., Farmingdale, passed away on
Sunday, May 19. He is survived
by his wife, Florence M.; his

F and A. M. Bethpage Lodge 975
and the Fire Department. Religious
services were conducted
at the Farmingdale Methodist
Church on Thursday, May 23,
followed by cremation at Washington
Memorial Cemetery in
Coram. Arrangements were

Wuerth Named Aide To
National V. F. W. Commander
Joseph A. Scerra, Commander-
in- Chief of the Veterans of
Foreign Wars of the United
States, has announced the appointment
of Fred Wuerth of 134

as National Aide- de- Camp, VFW.
In appointing Wuerth, Scerra
commented, " ft has long been
the practice of the national organization
to pick men for this
appointment who are dedicated to
serving their communities and
to furthering the ideals of the
nation and the Veterans of
Foreign Wars. The record of
Mr. Wuerth proves he is such
a person and I know he will
continue to serve the organization
