FINED, THREATENS TO DISPOSSESS HIS MOTHER-IN-LAW
She Accused Him of Forcing Door
to Her Home; He denies Cliarge
Bat Has to Pay $10
Freepoit, May 19.—Joseph Flaherty of 148 Newton boulevard was lined $10
in court Tuesday for forcing the door
of the premises of his mother-in-law, Mrs. Jklt.ry Tyes, at 150 Newton boule vard on tbe afternoon of April 30.
>lrs. Tyes testified that ho burst open the door, and her statements were c»r- roboratei by two witnesses.
Flaherty testified that Mrs. Tyes wait his mother-in-law, and that his wife had been 111 and not in accord with her mother for sorpe time. On the day in question she had gone out for the first time and had guhe to her mother's back door, asking that she might come In and .speak to her.
Mrs. Tyes told her tq come In, and In another moment Flaherty heard a scuf¬ fling in.slde, and fearing for his wife's safety, wrenched open the door to see what wxH going on. Mr.s. Flaherty tes¬ tified that her efforts at a reconciliation h.ad met iritlt little success and that her mother was trying to put her out of the house when Flaherty intervened.
Flaherty conductetl his case him.self, including cross-examinations. He stated that his efforts to make his section of Bennington Park as clean as possible had made enemie.s for him, and thnt the pre.sen^t trouble had started over the dumping of garbage on his premises.
He had not entered the house of his mother-in-law, but had merely opened the door to see what was going on in¬ side. As a result of the ca.se, Flaherty threatens to start dlsj)0.sses proceedings a^'ainst his mother-ln-iaw through the civil court.s. His flne of $10 was paid and he was allow<*d to depart.
Flaherty appeared to be a negro of .soni^ education, anil he made a good impies.sion in court. His mother-in- law appeared to be a meek and gentle old "Mammy," btit It was evident that an undercurrent exl.sted that was not tnado public.
tie Main ?;troft. Hempstead, on July 1.
We, the majority of the ex-«erTlce 'men of Hempstead and vicinity, have loag watched with Interest the great work this branch has been doing for »ervice men in the past three years. Innumerable in¬ stances came up before the organi¬ zation of the American Legion Post in Hempstead—In.stances whereby this branch was enabled to help many service men in many ways. They are also at present, furnish¬ ing lunches to over 60 school chil¬ dren and teachers, thereby helping in A,mericanizntion work, which will be of untold value in the yeara to come.
We, the members of Hempstead Post, The American Legion, thor¬ oughly believe thnt by so closing this canteen and social service house an irreparable inju.stice will be done to the many people now being as- al.sted by this branch.
We earnestly request your re¬ consideration of the momentous de- ci.slon you have made to close the chapter.
Appreciating In advance any ef¬ forts you may make toward-^econ. sidering this .serious matter, we aiv, Respecfully yours,
ALDRICH VAN DOHLEN, JR., Cororoander.
