Cedarhurst. June 28.—Th» fa^noun clubtiou!s« at CMlarhurnt Park in Moon to b« one ot tbe b«>8t hotels on Lon': Island. The majnilficent club house, with acres of Rround surroundinK It, was sold a few days aco to R. Smith, acnior member in the firm of R. Smith A Co. of West nth street. New Tork City. He hop«s to have It open to the public by July 15.
This club houae is probably one of the b*st known places in the United States. It was made historic as well as famous during the War, by the gener oslty of ita fonner owner—one of Am- . erica's greatest merchants—A. Adel- berg, who has retail stores in forty cities. * More than 5000 soldiers were enter¬ tained ,«^,the Cedarhursr Club, and fareweft dinners were given them, largely at the expense of Mr. Adelbtrg. I At the end of the War, Mr. Adelberg Loffered to present the club house nnd grounds to J. Franklin Bell Post, Am¬ erican legion. But, owing to the smnll membership and the heavy carrying charges, it was unable to accept the generous gift.
It Is understood that Mr. AdellMTg sold the club for IJijerty Bond.s and cash.
.Mr. Smith haa made elaborate plan.-i io remodel and renovate the club and Improve the landHcapt-. Already a large force of men are at work. It ,n believed tliat the hottl will' be open about ,Tuly 16.
Mr. Smith intends to beautify thf lake and canal adjoining the club, to provide bathing, boating and Ashing facilities, connecting directly with Jamaica Bay.
The dining rooms, reception balls, furnishings and dancing hall can only be appreciated by inspection. There i.s nothing else like It on Long Island.
As the Mountain House in the C'a's- kills Mountain.s is .said to have henti built because Its owner was avercharg ed for a meal at a nearby resort, so this hotel is being opened liecauae Mr. Smipi was overcharged at a Long Island Inn. He is determined to establish a render\'0U8 for automobiles and neighbors where the best meal it I.s possible to serve can be secure! iit a reasnnable price.
The name and the motto of the new hotel win be "Cedarhurst Inn, a hotel of a Square Deal."
The hotel is equipped with four per¬ fect bowling alleys, four double tennis- !ifcoiirtfc..«hower baf^s, etc. ;"'-'^fm-t,^ Mr, Smith has offered to permit th<? American Legion and neighbors to use the tennis courts and bowling alley.s any night;) of the .week except Satur¬ days and Sundays. Ho has also offer¬ ed the American Legion the use of the dance hall at any tltne on reasohiUile notice.
The manager of the new hotel is already manager of three of the best hotels In the Herald Square section.
Mr. Smith Is now one of the largest real estate owners of Long Island and Manhattan. He recently purchased for cash, property ot the Baldwin Estate, 7 West 7Cth^ street. Central Park West adjoining the residence of former Am
