Freeport. April 13.—Some men go through life «alllng attention to all of their iiubllr worku and virtues und nev¬ er miiw an opiKirtunlty to get their name in print or before the public eye. Other men lead their lives, quietly and without gusto, doing work for the l)ene- fit of their neighbors and for the ben- fit of their community without expect ing public prai.ie. Cities are built Ui>on the effortB of auch men, and Freepori Is fortunate In having a number of them. Hyman Schloss. who owns tho largest atore In Freeport, is of the type that is a builder. He came here about thirty years ago from Russia, long before the Red iiand started to rule Its bloody reign over the land. ,
Soon nfter arriving In this countrj- Ml'. Schloss made one fortunate move: he married Miss Lillian Livingstone of New Brunswkjk, N. J.
He flrst started business opposite the Freeport Bank In a building known .is the old Opera House and nfter two years mo\'ed to the corner of Mnin street and Merrick road. That was called "Nichols Corner" in those days.
Mr. Schloss had Initiatlvo and was the first to put window display fixtures und hanging gasoline lamps In his win¬ dow. When the electric light pl.ant started in Freeport he was the first to turn on lights in his .store window.
His business prospered and soon he added to the store occupied by the rem- pany at the present time. He is active in vlilage affairs and belongs to the Odd Fellows, the B. P. O. K., Rebecca Lodge and is a trustee of the Temple B'nai Israel, He Is a charter member of the Wide Awake Knglne Co.. the second oldest c'ompany wn the village, and re¬ calls the burning of the old school house when an attempt was made to put out the blaze by throwing snow on the flames.
Mr. .Schloss has two .sons. Dr. Mervin L. Schloss, who Is a rising young den¬ tist with a growing practice, atul Ijiw¬ rence. who is associated with hi.f father I in the store. Mr. Schloss Is C2 years of •age and has seen many changes in Free- i IK)rt.
j The cluster of lights outside hLs store show his progressiveness .and he Is the I only one that has ever had the inili- intive nnd interest to ti'y and do .some- i thing for the village streets. I Mr. .Schloss is quiet nnd unassiimint; I but hi.s work In tho village has been of jthe most constructive kind and Freeport is all the better for having men of lii.s I typo.

ANNUAL mSSiC WEEK CELEBRATION, APRIL 17 te 24
New York City will have its second annual celebration of Music Week April 17 to 24. The purjKJse of Music Week is to focus publk* attention on music through a concentration of mu¬ sical arti\'ity: and to spread the ben¬ efits of music more widely among the people.

Not only did a mighty wave of har¬ mony sweep over the city but the con¬ centration of eCfort arrested the at¬ tention of our great cosmopolitan population, and Impressed on Its con¬ sciousness the wonderful versatility of music and Its Importance in the lives of all people. Many other cities are following New York's example and are Instituting an annual music week.
New Vork's second Music Week will build on the foundation iaid in Febru¬ ary. 1920. tho account of which is published In book form.
Thf* pui*pose of this event la to Im¬ press upon everyon** the value und mission of music.
Tho InHuence of music must re.ach those vast clrcleti of the people who

All organizations are urged to Join in this celebration; but here in Rock¬ ville Centre we ask psurtlculorly for the cooperation of the churches, com¬ munity chorus, Y. W. C. A., music teachers and the schools. Some of the w^ys In whieh we may emphashic tbe importance of music In the schni>ls afe: By musical programs. lectures on the value of mu8U\ stories of lives of com- pusem illustrated by playing their work, and by urging students to at¬ tend concerts and recitals. Plans aro being formulated for the celebration In our schools, so let us all in some small way join our voices In the great wxve of harmony which Is sweeping o»'er the country.
