FIREMEN'U TOURNAMENT
All of UB who sre interested In the Yolunteer liremen—and who o» Long Inland Ib not?—will be eager to know the results of tb<» contests at Port Waahlngton next Thursday. Thou¬ sands of flremen will be In tbe vil¬ lage that day and scores of the men will compete in exciting coatssts.
Aside from the fact tbat every red blooded person likes the excitement of spirited contestB, it-is a fact that nearly all these contests represent regular lines of endeavor in flre flghtlng. The winner of a contest, therefore, pi-oves hlu ability to do well the work be has undertaken as a member of one of the volunteer com¬ panies.
A case in point Is the contest in which companies strive to have a man at the top- of' a ladder of given size In the shortest time. Firemen drill weeks to win this contest. '
The other night, when the Ocean 8ide High School was blazing and companies came from several nearby viUagos to help put out the fire, this ladder utunt was In actual operation. One compuny put up a ladder with a man on it, so that by the time the "ibp Of the ladder .struck the brick wall tliere^ was one of "the* boys" ready to direct a stream from the company's hose.
Port Waohington feels that it Is honored In having the Southern New York Volunteers come to tha Village for the annual meeting and promises a fine time foj^ all who attend.
Our guess is that there will be at least teh thousand visitors there that day.

As signlflcant of the efforts that are being made to stimulate .^trade and h^p ont the foreign buyer, may be m«ntk>aed the fact that the UaMwin Locomotive Company haa accepted large order for engines for Europe on a ten yenr credH basis, and another order from a Central Europe nation that will make pnyntent In oil instead of money. This transaction reverts to simple "^trter, goods for goods, the basts of all trade,*money l>elng simply the yard.stick of values.
With our vast resources and produc¬ tive power and a needy world crying for goods and more goods, It remains only to flnd a basi-s of trade to get them moving toward consumption. WHY DO VACATION WORK?
Young people under 16 years of age can undoubtedly profit by a whole summer's vacation. The years between 14 and 16 are years of growth and de¬ velopment and every opiiortunlty should be given children to grow aod develop physically at this lime. Lack of such a chance, may mean a physlatl handicap which will take years to over¬ come.
Beys and girls who are over six¬ leen ahould consider Well, by them¬ selves and with their parents," before they spend tM whole summer loafing. Summer time is the possible chaiue to learn tho business of living. It is the best Ume In which to find out their desires and likes In the matter of oc- (:ui)ation—a priceless period, when the work done is not vital to sui>|>orl but gives experience which ia as good us money in the bank.
Supi)>o«« a boy can earn |12 a week without any experience and after one summer's experlerfCe he can earn $15 a week or a gain of $3. This is a gain of $156 a year which Is the Inter¬ est on }2600. Therefore one summer's experience would be worth at least that muuh in helping him to earn money later on.
There Is also another side to the question of vacation work. During sohool and college young people live in a little world of their own in which moet of t^ose they know und meet arc about the same age. In the summer there is an opportunity to get in touch with the real world and flnd out the demands whk-h It will malce upon them and the opportunities that are open tor work and other activities. Experleme of this kind will often make the school work of the next year more worthwhile and satisfy that craving which most boys have to get out and have a share in the world's work.
Olrla also cnn use this time to learn Momethlag ahout living. Summer time is the part of the yeur when the can¬ ning is done, when they can' learn from their mothers the business of
running a house. K thty arc going in to ofllc-e work and have had the house- keeping expcrienca it will often be possible to substitute for those on vaca¬ tion or to study different offlfe meth¬ od.'*. Summer also offers opportunity to do various kinds of social and wel¬ fare work such as play-ground super¬ vision.
Vacation work of this kind—while It will bring in some revenue—is worth far more ns experience than il is in revenue produced.
If the boy referred to above. Imd. inatead of taking the $12 a week Job which gave him experience secured one ul $15 a week he would, have made $aft more during the three months .tt work whereas by taking the Job paying tP-i u week he gained exiKjrience worth $2(iO0 in future earning ability. Hoys and girls secure vacation work tor the sake of experience must realize that the training they receive costs the em ployer money and they must expeci to work for much less than the market rate for exi)erlenced help.
There have been many young people In the past who have used summer vacation to secure money enough lu keep them in school nnd this is, of course, praiseworthy, but in-so doing Ihey may have missed the chance to find out how to apply their school training. Those who take professional training, especially, cannot begin too early to question how and where they are going to use their schooling. Be¬ fore It is finished a professional course costif usually tS,000 or more in addition to the time apent, which is beyond pii<'c and oannot be recovered. Most people before buying a house have the sense at least to look it over and And out whether the houae la auMed to their requirements. Wc have not yet I'ome to the iwint where we can apply piiual discretion to the choosing of an occufmtlon and it is only tlie occuMional person who takes the trouble to' Investi¬ gate thoroughly before undertaking it an occupation which he hopes to niake a life work.
