With womanly tn»ultlon the meiKilxsni realized that the surcnt way to a^nan'n heart Is via the gastronomic llne\ *nd tho "eats" that were heaped upon /he table we.''» of the bent.
Mrs. Agnes Earon, 'president of th|p Woman's Auxiliary and every member of the organization contribute*! her share for the "fai>y8" feast, and It will be long remembered by ex-doughboys and gobs.
The hall was prettily decorated for the occasion. Tables were set all around with the t>oys on the outside and all the girls on the Inslcie, wherd they could be seen and admired.
John Hartman, Jr., had hardly bet-n in the room five mimites before he hnd started praising his mother's .straw¬ berry shortcake, and as there were over forty Legionnaires present, there was nothing to do but cut "Ma" Hartman's cuke Into forty pieces. Aa a result there will bo forty acceptances to din¬ ner at the Hartman's any time Ihe in- vltJition is extended.
The 100 per cent chrf at th« Routh Shore Apartments had concocted a won- dei-ftil chocolate cake, and that too was soon devourod. And then there were dainty sandwiches anrt salads and doughnuts. Irving Oxenhnm explo<led a "bon mot" when he placed one to his eye and exclnlnied, .'Join the navy and see the world, IhrouKh a i)orthole." Outlines Memorial Day Frograni

JRf>LY FAILURE MADR HLOTEHS BV L8K OF PECTIN FROM APPLE
Jelly which Will not "jell" may «om»?tlmeB be reclaimed by the use of pectin. A quart of grape-Juice which had refused to become Jelly was re¬ cently iirought Into the experimental kitchen of the Home EconflS^ics Offire. Department of Agriculture. By the addition of a small amount of apple pectin a firm, flhe-flavored grape Jelly was obtained. Because of this success a whole shelf full of Jelly failures, from which the sample was taken, can now be redeemed.
Food specialists say thai: a knowl- i^ge of' the making and use of pectin w'ill not only help the housewife in cafes like the foregoing, but will in- ore*se In several ways the' yield of Jelly from various fruit juices. Some frultfl^ such as strawberries and pears, do tM)t contain sufficient pectin t< make Jelly; pectin must be added. Other /ruits like quinc* and grape contain sufficient pectin, hut have Juices thast will bear diluting with wa¬ ter if extra pectin is used, bo that more quartK of jelly will result.
Pectin may be easily extracted from applesf also fram the citrus fruits, and kept ready for use with Julcea that luck this ingredlftnt.

HTIML'LATE PLANT GROWTH
Rlpo blueberries were gathered In February, Mnrch and April la the greenhouses of the United States De¬ partment of Agriculture as a result of experiments in the srtlmulatlon of plant growth by a ))eriod of chilling.
These plants werp the large hybrids d^velope<l from wild blueberries through 10 years of lieleotlon and breeding. Tho largest berrlea reacbed a diameter of over three-quarters Ot an inch.
At various times from midsummer to autumn the plants were placed In glass frames artificially chilled. After two to three months' chllllnsf they were brought Into a greenhouse and liegan growing and flowering at once, while similar plants that had not been through the <'hilllng period continued dormant in the same greenhouse. Clardeners have applied the method In sfime degree to various plants, such as the lily-of-the-valley. It Is only re¬ cently, however, that a department ex¬ perimenter discovered that a period o£ chilling Is a general requirement of northern plants.

GOOD MUSIC PROGRAM IN RECITAL TO ASSIST HOSPITAL FOR BABIES
Freeport, May 28.—The vast amount! of work done at the Power House since | the Village Board decided to put In an otf'burning engine Is due In large de¬ gree to the efforts of one man, Ray-j nwnd J. Miller. |
Trustee Miller was put on the Pow¬ er Housn Committee last yeaj' at the time the new engine was decided upon. HInce that time he has been there al¬ most every day hustling things alonjf und seeing to It that the village got the best that money could buy and the most efficient work possible.
Trustee Miller and Engineer Smith have woifked together at all times and the completed engine is a monument to their efforts. The other members of the Village Board have taken a keen Interest in the-progress of the work, but the one member who has put indi¬ vidual effort ;and a great amount of time Into it is Raymond MUler.
Trustee Miller is a very busy mat, and has many interests In the vllint:' that take up his time, but the matt, i of the power house has been a speci.ii duty with him and stands as a monu¬ ment to the efforts of a man who worked without pay and a wholeheart- ed interest In the welfare of his home town.
