, classes of motor vehicles during the months when traffic ordinarily Is light¬ est.
The winter just ended wns unusually disastrou.s from the standpoint of dam¬ age to roads, reports of engineers show. Trucks running with chains, ;cut the surfaces of many highways. Rains found ready access to tho wearing sur¬ faces and bases alike, and as a result, small holes soon developed into large breaks.
Sections of highways whleh withstood the early winter In good shape fulled under the travel of February and March, when warm weather drove from the ground the small amount of frost and left the highways .soft and spongy. The importance of adequate drainage of highways has been brought home to engineers and road builders. Had good dralnag;e sy.stems been provided, many of fhe roads undoubtedly would have stood up In better fashion, according to experts, who havo studied the effects of the winter in this state.
Roads of many types arc numbered among thos4 in need of repairs or re¬ surfacing this spring. Reports show that tn many cities and towns brick and other streets wero badly scarred and broken by tire chains. In suburtton and country sections, hard sui-faced highways unprotected by top surfaces suffered the same fkte.
From the many falljires, highway en- gitieers and builders have learned facts of vital Importance, which promise fo havo a bearing upon the planning of roads during thla '^nd coining years.' The success with which u.sphaltlc top¬ ped highways withstood the rigors of the winter traffic has shown that not only are roads of this type capat>le ot bearing the heaviest traflh;, but they will meet unusually severe conditions with success.
In addition to absorbing the shocks Of traffic, thd natlTs take asphalt sur- es shut out water from the founda- s, thus reducing the chance of fall- Macadam roads, constructed with as¬ phalt, came through the teat of winter I in good condition. The stone of the 'aiirfaoe apparently was held firmly in place, while the natural "give" imparted by the native asphalt saved the high¬ way from cracks and breaks under Iteavy loads.
Considerable resurfacing of old high¬ ways with asphalt now Is scheduled by many comtties. The pnicti(:« of cutting dowo axpeodlturea 9f th* taxpayars*] mtnpy by uUUxing old roads aa foua- itatkms is spreading, and under this syatem of oonstructioa the cost of new highways is limited, to the cost of the three or four inches nf new top.
