WE NEED HOUSES
While there may be aome regret on the part of those who hold eethetic ideas of the dear old Hempatead of a decade ago, with Its grand old country estates, there are many today who Will rejoice that houees of 2S to 30 rooms each are not to be retained in their present state.
With the unprecedented demand for homes that may be rented or pur¬ chased, certain unpopular ideas are suggested when one Aads ao much good housing unused.
It is therefore with satisfaction that one reads in The Daily Review news columns that one of these big houses Is to be converted at once into four houses of a size suitable for use by an average sized family.
Many houses and bungalows arc in course of construction in Nassau Counter today, buf few <rt Ibim have more than ten rooms, most of them not more than seven. They represent tha rvquirenivats of a very auh- stantlal part of the community and The Review would IHie j^o see thou¬ sands more of them built in the county this year.
New York City apartment house building, the tW^'f^lumns report, haa increased four hundred percent since Itia roceut chaitge in tbe rental laws. If renting conditions in the city are so much better that investors are again pleased to put their spare funds into house property, it is fair to assume that it is also profitable to build in the suburban section.
We need hundreds more houses in the county and could illl thousands with desirable residents.
Beyond question there is a chance to get abundant return (or the invest, ment in such houses without charg¬ ing the elorbitant rentals that are now driving home seekers away.

AN AVHRAOE DAY
Wo rise at 7 in the morn,
Wo do a daahlae caper,
To glean a yard of ncwsie stuff,
With which to nil the paper;
We go the rounds, and hit tbe trail,
And and tha/t all toe soon,
The clock has hit the upper end
That marks the hour of noon;
A bite of lunch, a sudden hunch.
Back to the old typewriter.

^\bort Walter Hampden's Work Wdltor of The Dally Review.
SIR: I was pleased and gratified to retul In your Issue of May 23 a mo»t In- teUigent appreciation of Walter Hamp- dep as Skylock. The many diflcrinK in¬ terpretations ot the important charac¬ ters of Shakespeare that have been of¬ fered by students and afrtora in all countries often appear strained and un¬ real and far from the alwaya human per- Honalitie.s which 8hakCBi)eare jwrtrays. The writer of this article shows a very nice discrimination as the result of his studies. From what I have heard of Mr. Hampden 1 know that his chief con¬ cern Is always to render Shakesiware's plays as Shakespeare himself would have inresented them -were he lIvInR to¬ day. This point you have clearly em¬ phasised and I think It Is a very im liortant one. Perhaps the chief charm of your article lies In the sympathetic attitude of the commentator and this is much enhanced by the smouthness and HimpUcity of the phraseology and dic¬ tion.
I don't quite agree with your com¬ ment regarding J. Harry Irvine. Wc must not forgot that as Bassanio he is primarily the friend of Antonio and that low making Is merely incidental. I think Mr. Irvine was very well chosen for the ijart of Bassunio. as he i.s in the i)art of Claudius in Hamlet, as the rcdunt in The Taming of the Slirov/, and as MacDuff In Macbeth, iir. Ern¬ est Rowan's ardent and vivacious na¬ ture comes out so well In the part of I.ucontio In The Taming of the Shrew tljat I think he could liardly be substi¬ tuted with advantage.
Your editorial will surely appeal t" all your readef.s and 1 ft^cl wnuld he h fcredit^ m 41^'paper. It is the mOKt truthful and unbiased report of Mr. Hami)den's work that I have read.

TO REMOVE FRUIT STAINS FROM DELICATE FABRICS
Willi the coining of summer, the problem of reinoviiiK fruit stains from table linen and garments is bound to perpleK most housokoepers, yet of all stains they are said by tho homo economics workers "at Cornell to be the most easy to remove.
Spreading the stained portion of the Uiaterlal over a Iiowl and iHturiiiK boil¬ ing ]l|uiter from a height so as lo strike^he stain with force will usually remove it. Camphor likewise Is used 'with good effect. Some fruit stains. however, are more obstinate than others. Glycerine sometimes hcl|>8 in removing peach stains.
iron rust may be removed in various
ways. One way which is effeetive with white materials is to wet the stained part with Ixjrax and water or with diluted household ammonia and spread It over a bowl of boiling water.
A 10 peivent solution of hydrochloric acid, which may be obtained from an>» druggist. \)ourud drop by drop on the stain until it brightens and then im¬ mediately washed out with water Is also used.
A 10 perm-nt solution of oxalic acid may be sinulaiily employed. In »'iUior case, a second application may l)e necessary.
A mixture ot .salt and lemon julre rubbed Into the rust slain and plated va the sun sometimes will remove the runt. This is, however, a much .slower process.
MlMew may be remowd by soiilung the .stain in u weak at;id such as lemon Juice or vinegar and r.xposinK il to the sunlight, or by wetting it with a paste of soft soap and pulverized chalk before exposing to sunlight. Where the mil¬ dew is ^ ery ImuI, a bleai/hiin; a«cnt, such as Jttvelle water, may have to Ije used.
Scorch from an over-hot iron may Ije removed by soap and water, or by danipeiilntr tlie .spot witli water and fS- posinK to sunlight for a day or longer. A slight H(-orch may be rubbod away with a bread crust,
""^A trial test should be made of any reagent by placing a drop of it on an inner seam of the garment to note its effect on the color and texture of the fabric from which the stain Is to be removed.
