The Freeport volunteer fire department has received
many commendations for its fine work, from residents,
school officials and businessmen. Some typical comments
in letters are; "the excellent manner in which your
men conducted themselves,"... .''your prompt action was
the major factor in keeping our losses to a minimum,"
...."our building and business was saved from complete
destruction and chaos." Newly elected officers are

Personal Safety For Women
Because women are frequently the victims of criminals,
the Freeport Police Department urges them to take the
following precautions;
A t Home; Notify the police immediately if strangers
ring the doorbell and ask vague questions;, if persons
without credentials ring the doorbell, seek employment,
or attempt to gain admittance to solicit or sell; if
strangers seek information about your family or neigh-bors
or their whereabouts; if you^receive a number of
phone calls and the caller hangs up when you answer;
if suspicious persons or cars are in your block.
In Your Car; While driving keep car doors locked.
When parked, close windows and lock the car. Park in
lighted areas. If your car breaks down at night pull
to the side of the road, lock yourself in and display
a white cloth or marker from the driver's window.

Holiday Sanitation Schedule
Due to the Memorial Day hoiiday there wil1 be no Wed-nesday
trash pick-up on June 1st. Garbage collections
for the holiday week will be: Tuesday & Thursday for
Merrick Road and north; Wednesday & Friday for south
of Merrick Road. - .
postpone Urban Renewal Vote1
A public referendum to decide whether or not the
village will go "into an urban renev/al project will be
postponed until the latter part of next year, Urban
Renewal Director Stanfey J. Roth reported. Originally
scheduled for late this year the vote will be delayed
because federal planning funds could not be made avail
able at the time expected.

The annual organization meeting of the Village Board
of Trustees, when appointments are made for the year,
was held on the first Monday in April. The Board noted
that this date conflicted with the first evening of
the Passover Holy Days but it was not possible to post-pone
the meeting due to the strict requirements of the
Village Law of the State of New York. The Board decided
to ask state legislators to amend the law to allow
postponement of meetings in such cases. Appointments
