NEATNESS IS THEIR BAG - Freeport Village Trustee Thomas J. Lovelidge, left, gets an assist from
Mayor Robert J. Sweeney, as they demonstrate the new heavy duty plastic trash bags. The Village
of Freeport is selling the plastic bags at cost to Freeport residents, ten cents each, across
the counter at Village Hall, Monday through Friday, 8:30 AM to *.:30 PM. The plastic bags have
been extremely helpful in the Village's leaf removal program and the Village has placed a total
of 50,000 bags on sale for the current year.
The Village Officials have indicated the plastic bags offer many advantages including: they are
inexpensive and eliminate the need for cartons and bushel baskets; they are light to carry and
-save-the.citizen the chore.of returning empty containers froa the curb to the house; they are •
neat and can be easily tied with the twist binder supplied so nothing can spill out and litter
the streets; animals are not attracted to properly closed bags as the polythylene plastic bars
odor transfer; the bags are waterproof so cuttings and leaves do not get wet and rain-soaked;
they help to expedite trash collection and keep FREEPORT an attractive community.

NEK TAXICAB RATRS PROPOSED Al-83 = 81.25; Al-8^ = $1.50; Al-85 = 51.75;
.In September the Village Board had under con-sideration
a proposed increase in rates charged
_by Freeport taxi companies. The proposed in-crease
would be in the amount of 25$ additional
for each zone.
In the center-fold of this Village News is a
map indicating the new rates. The proposed in-crease
was recommended by the Taxicab Committee,
after a study of the profit and loss situation
involving taxicab owners. The Committee noted
substantial increases in operating costs, not
only in Freeport, but throughout the metropol-itan
area, and said that Freeport residents
could not be given satisfactory service unless
the taxicab owners received an increase that
would enable them to make necessary repairs
and replacements of their cabs, and enable them
to hire satisfactory employees.
The map indicates fares from the zone to the
railroad. Other rates would be as follows:
