Power Boats Coming Back
JUNE 1982
For the fourth year, Freeport
will be the site of one of a nation-wide
circuit of offshore power
boat races. Headquarters will
again be the Town of Hempstead
Guy Lombardo Marina at the foot
of Guy Lombardo Avenue.
Race Day is Saturday, July 24
(rain date July 25). At least 40
boats will leave the Marina at
1 pm traveling down Little Swift
Creek and on to Jones Inlet. The
race itself is 110 miles long with a
circular course extending from
Rockaway Beach to the west and
Fire Island to the east.
Sponsor of this year's race,
called the Apache Classic, is Tom
Massata, owner of Race Head-quarters,
Inc. of Hudson Avenue,
Freeport. The 1982 race is limited
to- production class powerboats
and the prize money of $30,000 is
the largest amount in race history
for the production class. The race
will be run under the direction of
the South Bay, Performance As-sociation
of Patchogue as was the.
case in the previous years' races.
fThe excitement will actually
begin on July 21 when the boats
and racers from throughout the
country will begin arriving at the
Marina and checking into area
motels. The public is invited to
the Marina throughout the race
period to view the powerful boats,
. talk with the racers and feel
the pre-race excitement.
A parade of the boats will be
held in the waterfront area during
the twilight hours of Thursday (>
July 22. Race sponsor Massata
will also host groups of handicap-ped
children who will be given a
special tour of the pit area and
receive free refreshments.
A spectator fleet will be main-tained
at a Coast- Guard designat-ed
area at Jones Inlet on race day.
No crafts, outside of those offic-ially
designated as committee or
press boats, will be allowed out-side
.that area. Depending on
weather conditions, the race
boats can be seen in the distance .
from the offshore beaches from
Rockaway to Fire Island. The race -
may also be followed at the
Marina with race headquarters
there being in constant radio
contact with the Coast Guard and
committee boats anchored
throughout the course. Trophies
are awarded dockside when the
' first three winners come in.
These annual races are con-ducted
in cooperation with the
Freeport Chamber of Commerce,
Village of Freeport, Town of
Hempstead, U.S. Coast Guard
and the Freeport Tuna Club.
Further information on the
Apache Classic Race may be ob-tained

HOLIDAY GARBAGE
& TRASH PICKUPS
The schedule by which garbage and trash is picked up in Freeport is
determined-by the availability of the Town of Hempstead landfill area.
When that area is shut down for a holiday, there is no collection in the
Village. It is against environmental protection laws to collect and then
store garbage and trash overnight.
In addition,.when a holiday prevents the pickup of garbage on one
collection day in-the area, there is double the amount of garbage to be
-picked up the following day. For that reason, trash is not picked up on
that following collection day.
Holidays that close down the landfill area are New Year's Day,
Lincoln's Birthday, Washington's Birthday, Memorial Day, Indepen-dence
Day, Labor Day, Columbus Day, Election Day, Veterans Day,
Thanksgiving and Christmas.
Following is'arlist of dates^on which trash or garbage WILL NOT BE
PICKED UP in the remainder of 1982.
