MASSAPEQUA PUBLIC LIBRARY
Bar Harbour Building
DEDICATION: JUNE 13, 1965
ABOUT OUR LIBRARY
Public library service in the Massapequas was established in the spring
of 1952 when a tax levy vote was supported by residents at the annual school
district meeting.
Voters at that meeting also elected the library's first Board of Trustees
which consisted of: The Reverend John Malcolm Haight, Me. George 1. Goss,
Mrs. Malcolm MacLachlan, Mrs. Jack Melkin and Mrs. Hector Donderi.
From a beginning in a rented store on Broadway, Massapequa, which
opened in January 1953 and saw a first year circulation total of 28,000 vol-umes,
The Massapequa Public Library has grown phenomonally. In September
1956, with the circulation rate already over 140,000 volumes, a new building
at 523 Central Avenue, Massapequa, was opened.
With the growth of the Central Avenue Building and the extension of
Book Trailer service throughout the district, Library circulation this year is
approaching 600,000 volumes.
Today'saddidon of the new Bar Harbour building to- Massapequa's
library facilities is the culmination of many years combined planning by the
Library Board and citizen's groups.
A portion .of the land upon which the building stands was donated to the
community several years ago by the Bar Harbour Shopping Center. It'splan-ning
and design has resulted from the dedicated efforts of many members of
this community as well as professional libraryconsultants;
.~ .-
The. new Bar Harbour building, with an initial stock of 30,000 volumes
which wiir'growto'50,000 within a few years, wiiI more than double the
library facilities of the community. While primarily a book lending facility, it
will also be able to provide many additional library services heretofore unavail-able
due to space limitations.
To all the members of the Massapequa community whose efforts have
made this dedication day possible, The Board of Trustees wishes to express its
deep and heartfelt appreciation.
